Prof. Eric Underwood was a key figure in ensuring that TEMA became an international organisation, and he enthusiastically supported TEMA's early symposia.

He died during preparations for TEMA 4, which he was hosting, and so his name is commemorated in the Underwood Lecture at each subsequent TEMA symposium
