J_Macdiarmid
Dr. Jennie Macdiarmid

Research Themes

•Concept mapping: development of evaluation frameworks for nutrition related policy and interventions.

• Environmental Determinants of Public Health in Scotland (EDPHIS) - childhood obesity case study.

• Survey of diet, influences on food choices and eating practices among children in Scotland in 2010.

• Children’s knowledge of non-milk extrinsic sugars, an educational intervention.

• Environmentally sustainable and healthy diets

Jennie is a senior research fellow in the Public Health Nutrition research group.  Her main research programme is looking at methodology for evaluation of community based nutrition related policies and initiatives. With the high prevalence of obesity there is a greater need for community based (e.g. in schools, workplaces, local community groups) nutrition and physical activity initiatives to address this problem.   The impact of national and local nutrition related public health policies on dietary behaviour and health remains unclear and the aim is to provide a framework for evaluation of nutrition related policies and community based initiatives.  A new area of research is to explore the types of diets that can combine both issues of environmental sustainability with dietary recommendations for health.  Other projects include a national dietary survey of diets of children in Scotland (FSA funded) and identifying the environmental determinations of obesity among children (RERAD funded).
