About

production crew'Better by Miles' explores the food miles debate over the sustainable production and distribution of food.

It is a 'Kids on Stage' resource being produced by the University of Aberdeen Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health as part of the Knowledge Scotland Project. All the material and guidance is provided in the resource to enable teachers and education leaders to use ‘Better by Miles’ in the classroom, as an assembly piece, or if preferred as a full scale production to invited audiences of friends and family.

‘Better by Miles’ is set in a TV studio where a rehearsal for a new cookery programme is taking place. This is a familiar concept which helps to engage the audience and to stimulate their thinking on this topic.

reading linesA script, lasting approximately 20 minutes, and guide to costumes and props is provided in a ‘How to Use’ section, alongside the music, which represents another cross-curricular aspect of the programme, and adds a great deal of fun and enjoyment to the production.  Leaders can use or adapt the materials to suit their pupils and the resource is flexible for use in education and with community groups.  There is a range of supporting activities to encourage further cross-curricular discussions and research.

Links to the Curriculum for Excellence (Scotland) are also provided. It is suitable for any children aged 7 and upwards
