Transport Impact

Whether you drive a car, take a bus or take the train it all has an impact on the environment as carbon dioxide is produced one of the greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change. It is important to remember that carbon dioxide is not the only greenhouse gas produced but for these calculations it is the only gas to be taken into account. Can you calculate the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced for the following journeys.

Activity One - Journey 1 Car versus Bus

Car vs Bus

  1. Elizabeth has a small engine car, less than 1.4 litres. Each day she drives 10 kilometres to work and 10 kilometres home from work. For every kilometre she drives 0.17kg of CO2 is produced. How many kg of CO2 does Elizabeth produce each day just going to and from work by car?

  2. Elizabeth could take the bus. The bus would not go on a direct route to work. One the bus she would travel 15 kilometres to work and 15 kilometres home from work. For each kilometre Elizabeth travels on the bus 0.06kg of CO2 is produced. How many kg of CO2 would Elizabeth produce each day travelling to and from work by bus?

  3. What is the difference between the level of CO2 produced by car travel and bus travel?

Activity Two - Journey 2 Family Travel

  1. The Jones family are going on holiday to a place called Wick. They live in Aberdeen. Wick is a total of 343km. The Jones family drive a car with a large engine, larger than 2.1litres. For every kilometre they drive 0.27kg of CO2 is produced. How many kg of CO2 will be produced by travelling to Wick?

  2. There are five members of the Jones family. 0.06kg of CO2 is produced by travelling 1 kilometre on a bus. If each member of the Jones family were to travel by bus how many kg of CO2 would be produced? What is the total for the whole family?

  3. Which produces more CO2 , the Jones family travelling by bus or by car to Wick?

  4. There is another dimension to the discussion that needs to be considered. The bus would be going anyway so would it be correct to calculate the CO2 production as 0.06kg per member of the family. Once you have completed the questions debate this with others who have completed the questions.
