Save Energy Save Money!
Energy in the form of electricity is needed to make appliance like lights, televisions and computers work. Electricity can be made by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. When fossil fuels are burned they produce carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gasses. To help the environment we must reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced.
Activity One
There are lots of ways we waste energy. Can you name any?
1.
2.
3.
4.
If we decrease the amount of energy that we use we can make a real difference in the amount of carbon dioxide we produce and reduce our carbon footprint. Little changes can make a real difference to the environment.
Activity Two
In groups make a poster that could be displayed in school or at home to remind people to save energy and also save money. Think creatively in your groups all the ways you can save energy. The list has been started off below for you to continue.
- Turn off the light when you leave a room
- Get into the habit of saving electricity. Switch off computers and televisions when you have finished with them to save power.
- Finding cleaner energy like wind power will reduce global warming. Wind farms, solar panels and wave power are forms of ‘green’ energy that do not increase greenhouse gas levels.
- Recycling rubbish saves resources such as wood and coal from being burnt for power.
- Use your own energy whenever you can – why take the car when you can walk or take a bike.
