Can you make an environmentally healthy meal?

It is important for our health that we eat a balanced diet. But can we eat healthily and be environmentally friendly too?

An enviromentally friendly meal is one that would include food that is in season, some food produced locally, food that has not had to travel too far to get to the table and one that didn’t need a lot of pesticides or a lot of energy or water to be made.

In groups or on your own make up a plate of food that would provide you with a balanced breakfast, lunch or dinner. The eatwell plate produced by the Food Standards Agency will help you make sure you have the correct amount of fruit and vegetables, bread, rice pasta and cereal etc.

Remember not to make the portion too large. We should only eat the amount of food that we need to do our daily activities. If we eat too much food we could put on weight. Excess energy will be stored as fat.

To make it easier to make the meal environmentally friendly you could refer to the Scottish Seasonal Produce Guide.
