Let's get people to buy local
Advertising is a good way to help people learn about something which could change their behaviour. The government has adverts on TV encouraging us to eat healthy food, take exercise, recycle and lots of other messages.
In groups make an advert to encourage people to buy locally produced food. The adverts can be presented to the rest of the class and maybe performed to the audience if you’re inviting guests to your ‘Better by Miles’ performance.
Each advert must last no longer than 3 minutes. Your aim is to give the audience the reasons why they should buy local food so that they can make an informed decision.
- Locally produced food is fresher
- Locally produced food supports local producers such as Scottish Farmers
- Locally produced food has not needed to travel so far and will therefore potentially not have produced a lot of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide.
- It is very environmentally friendly if you have walked or cycled to the shops to buy it.
- Buying local food supports the local economy.
- Our food choices have an effect on the environment.
You may want to dress up in a costume for your advert as you may want the advert to be presented by a farmer for example or a mother. Have a dicussion in your group to decide who is going to be in your advert and what are they going to say. It may help to write your notes down and maybe produce a script.
Scotland has a fantastic larder and our food and drink are famous all over the world so we are very lucky to be able to buy such good local produce. When you are in the supermarket why not look for Scottish food or find out where there is a farmers market which sells locally produced meat, dairy and lots of other goodies.
